At Home with Galbiati Gourmet / Rocky's Pizza
Date: 31 July 2007 20:30 (Tuesday)
Another one of those days again... unfortunately not mine to bear today. The Wife has had one of her worst possible days at work in a very long time. Sometimes she tells me that she feels the whole weight of the company on her shoulders and by the looks of it, it certainly seems so. She may be the most capable person in the office but there's only so much that one can shoulder... Maybe it's time to consider opening a little restaurant of our own... she can be the chef, the manageress and the waitress... I'll just sit happily behind the cashier and collect the money... :p
And so after my 8km run at the gym and Wen's 12 hours non-stop fire fighting in the office, we decided that this time round, she was the one that needed the alcohol and me would attempt to be the ugly but slightly entertaining companion. But then.... wine and companion aren't good enough without food. So we ended up Ta Bao'ing Fried Chicken Wings from Rocky's and Good O' Pastas from Galbiati Gourmet Deli at Rail Mall.
First, the alcohol... It was really between a bottle of Laurent Perrier Rose Champagne and a bottle of Selaks 2006 Sauvignon Blanc from Malborough New Zealand. Wen decided that the bottle of white would go better with the food at hand so it was down to the Selaks. In my previous posting, i made a declaration that you can't go wrong with a bottle of 2006 white from Australia or New Zealand... I was proven right once again. The Selaks is nowhere compared to the Gibbston Valley or a Cloudy Bay but on it's own and for it's price, it was still quite good. The fruity flavours just explode in your mouth the moment it goes in and it lingers on indefinitely. It certainly went well with our food. Bottle of Selaks at Carrefour = S$30 something...
For starters, we had Fried Chicken Wings from Rocky's Pizza... that certainly looks good doesn't it? It's really not bad but if you want the most awesome chicken wings in Singapore, look no further than Ice Cold Beer at Emerald Hill or Harry's Bar at Boat Quay. The chicken wings there are to DIE FOR.... Total cost of 4 x Chicken Wings = S$7.50
Next up was the Tagliatelle Squid ink with Chilli Tomatos and Prawns from Galbiati Gourmet Deli. Ok, i know the picture of the Ta Bao'ed Pasta doesn't do justice but hey... i'm no professional photographer and i've got crap lighting at home! But dun let the useless pic above fool you... this is one of the BEST pastas you can ever sink your teeth into. It is OH SO GOOD! The texture of the Tagliatelle is Al Dente and the prawns are fresh and generous in portions. It would definitely have tasted better if the chilli used were chilli padis instead of normal chilli but that's really my own preference...
I thought i read from somewhere that the Chef, Roberto Galbiati used to be the chef at Da Paolo... which probably explains the quality of his food. I might be wrong though... problem with info junkies like me is that i can never remember half of the things i read...
Then there's the Beef Lasagna (Quit complaining about the quality of the pics!). Very nice.. If you are a Lasagna person, this should appeal to you. I've not a big fan of Lasagna and it certainly tasted good to me :)
Total Cost for the Pastas = S$25.50
Galbiati Gourmet Deli has got a very nice place over at Rail Mall. It's a 10 min walk from where we stay but we rarely go there simply because we find the wine selection to be "insufficient". And since it's so near where we stay we usually just do take aways. If you haven't been there yet, you should make a trip there. It's a really chill out place with friendly service staff and great food. Bring your own bottle of wine though...
